Poon Hill Trek – Complete Guide 2026 | Itinerary, Cost & Best Time

The Poon Hill Trek is one of the most popular short trekking routes in Nepal. It is perfect for beginners, families, and travellers who want a genuine Himalayan experience without spending many days on the trail or reaching extreme altitude.

Located in the heart of the Annapurna region, this trek combines breathtaking mountain views, blooming rhododendron forests, and rich Gurung and Magar village culture into one short and rewarding journey.

The trek is famous for its iconic sunrise viewpoint at Poon Hill at 3,210m, where golden morning light slowly spreads across the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, creating one of the most photographed and unforgettable moments in all of Nepal trekking.

Unlike longer and more technical Himalayan routes, the Poon Hill Trek is easy to moderate, well-marked, and fully supported by tea houses throughout, making it one of the best value short treks in Nepal starting from $555 per person.

Where is Poon Hill Trek Located?

The Poon Hill Trek is located in the western part of Nepal inside the Annapurna Conservation Area, the largest protected trekking region in the country. It sits between lush green hills and high Himalayan peaks, offering a perfect mix of accessible trail terrain and dramatic mountain scenery.

The main gateway to the trek is Pokhara, a lakeside city a few hours from Kathmandu. From Pokhara, trekkers drive to Nayapul or Ghandruk, where the trail officially begins. The route gradually climbs through terraced farmland, riverside paths, dense forests, and traditional villages before reaching the Poon Hill viewpoint above Ghorepani.

Key villages along the route include Tikhedhunga, Ulleri, Ghorepani, Tadapani, and Ghandruk, all home to the traditional Gurung and Magar communities who have lived in these mountains for generations.

Standard Poon Hill Trek Route

Pokhara → Ulleri (Drive) → Ghorepani → Poon Hill → Tadapani → Ghandruk → Pokhara

The trek begins with a scenic drive from Pokhara to Ulleri, which takes approximately 2 to 3 hours. From Ulleri, the trail starts on foot with a steady climb through stone stairways, terraced farmland, and small Magar settlements. On the first trekking day, you cover the route from Ulleri to Ghorepani, passing through rhododendron forests and traditional villages before arriving in the late afternoon.

Ghorepani at 2,850m is the main overnight stop before the pre-dawn hike to Poon Hill. The following morning, trekkers leave before dawn for the 45-minute climb to Poon Hill at 3,210m for the iconic sunrise panorama over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. After breakfast back in Ghorepani, the trail continues east through dense rhododendron forests toward Tadapani and Ghandruk before returning to Pokhara by vehicle.

Top Highlights of Poon Hill Trek

  • Poon Hill Sunrise at 3,210m – The most iconic moment of the trek. Trekkers leave Ghorepani before dawn, hike 45 minutes with headlamps, and reach the viewpoint just as golden light touches Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, and surrounding peaks. It is one of the most celebrated sunrise viewpoints in the entire Himalayan region.
  • Rhododendron Forests – The trail between Ghorepani and Tadapani passes through one of the most beautiful rhododendron forests in Nepal. In spring, the hillsides turn red, pink, and white with blooming flowers, making the walk feel like a natural garden.
